The Cyprus Services Rambling Club can lay claim to
being one of the oldest clubs still flourishing within the Services sporting
scene. It all began back in 1970 when a handful of service families living in
Limassol came up with the idea of going for a walk and a picnic somewhere out of
town on Sundays.
Little could this original group of friends imagine their club would still be
run on basically the same lines so many years later.
Membership of the CSRC is open to all Service Personnel and their families,
UKBCs and also expatriates, who make up about 75% of our current membership of
over 190. This gives the club a rich diversity of experience and interest that is
very noticeable if you listen to the various conversations along the way.
The CSRC rambles every second Sunday with an average of around 80 members taking
part and occasionally, can boast a formidable group of 120 walkers.
Individual Membership is
€10 and Family Membership is
€20
per year plus each walk you participate in will cost €3
per adult and €1.50
for under 16s. Want to give it a try? Then please
see 'Join Us' page for application
details.
Our fortnightly walks programme aims to provide a full and varied selection of
rambles to suit most reasonably fit people. Included within the programme, will
be some tough and challenging routes for the serious walkers, however there will
often be an easier alternative on the same day. Early morning and evening walks
are also included in the programme during the hotter months.
Also included in our annual programme are ‘Rambling Weekends’. A great chance for
you to bond with other club members. Staying in hotels at specially negotiated
prices, the CSRC have enjoyed locations from the Akamas Peninsular to Ayia Napa,
from Paphos to Protaras. Occasionally the club offers
an ‘Overseas Rambling Holiday’. Special walking holidays which have included trips to
Crete, Egypt, Sicily, Malta, Slovenia and Bulgaria. And that’s
not all! Just to spice an already busy programme, for more serious walkers who
enjoy a challenge, we have included the occasional ‘Explorer Walks’ (longer and at
higher grades than the regular walks) and ‘Wilderness Weekends’ (same as the
Explorer Walks but with an overnight stay at inexpensive hostelries or tavernas
in the areas). In addition to the above there is of course the annual
Christmas function. See 'Next Ramble' page
for a view at our planned forthcoming schedule of walks and events.
So, how do you get in to this exciting and interesting world of rambling?
Weekly CSRC adverts of forthcoming walks and notices appear in Lion
Newspaper. You can also ask
for details of the forthcoming walk by emailing: bookings@csrc.ws
or
call our answerphone: 99 292092 and we will get back to you.
On the day of the walk, luxury coaches collect ramblers at Epi Loopway Petrol
Station, Akrotiri main gate and Erimi Bridge and take them to the start of the
ramble. However, during the Summer
months (June - September) our walks are mainly 'Self-Drive Circular
Walks'. This allows Members to make their own decision after the
walk, whether to stay for a drink/meal.
Volunteer Walks Leaders who have planned and recce’d the route, will give a
short brief on a few basic club safety rules and if necessary any special points
concerning the walk before setting off.
Safety is a major consideration at all times and the leader will set a pace to
suit the group and climate, with frequent drinks and rests. It is imperative to
wear proper walking boots or strong trainers. Also bring plenty of water, a
snack and sun protection.
We are always very keen to enrol new members, particularly from the service
community. So come along and join in. You’ll be glad you did plus you’ll have
the added bonus of some exercise as well
